Combating your Cold

Combating Your Cold

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) a common cold is diagnosed as an external wind-cold pattern and your treatment plan is based on individual symptoms not the disease itself.

Chinese herbs can help decrease the severity of your cold, and quicken recovery time meanwhile avoiding pharmaceutical medicines that only treat temporarily. If caught soon enough you can prevent symptoms from worsening into a wind-heat pattern causing fever, sore throat and weakness.

There are many safe and effective protocols and herbal formulas that treat these presentations and are best over-seen by an herbalist.

  Tips:

  1. Keep your neck warm protecting it from direct exposure to cold. This includes leaving the gym after sweating or using cold air from a fan. Cold enters through the pores on the back of your neck making you susceptible to catching a wind-cold.

  2. Warm the interior. Even before the fever and sore throat begins you need to prevent the cold from worsening. Drink hot water, add raw ginger (two dime-sized pieces) plus raw honey (Manuka is best) and benefit from the anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties. Eat lots of soups and include your own bone broth using organic chicken. (It’s OK if you buy pre-made too ; ) It’s also wise to avoid too much cold and raw foods such as cold smoothies and sushi.

  3. Get sleep. No matter how busy you are take time to get more sleep and rest. Lack of sleep lowers immune response and is one of the main causes of illness.
